The population of living veterans drops to 14 million in 2036, from a high of 22.2 million in 2011. Half of this veteran population is aged above 65 years.*
In the U.S., veterans, retirees and their families now can obtain insurance through Affordable Care Act (ACA) exchanges, Tricare or VHA. Under ACA, many veterans and retirees will qualify for Medicaid and others might get lower-cost insurance coverage. This could render the existing separate health system for veterans redundant.
